"Unity" was inspired by my invitation to the 2016 Zi Gang Bei International Jade Exhibition in Suzhou, China. The jade I used on this piece shares many similarities with the traditional green nephrite deposits found in China, so I wanted the form of the piece to relate in some way to this similarity. By incorporating both the dragon and the eagle into an inextricably linked chimeric organism which in turn forms a vessel, I hoped to suggest the strong bond between China and America: each can be strong in their own way, but together, they can achieve even greater goals. "Unity" was carved from a semi-chatoyant piece of of Evergreen Jade^®. Scattered throughout this material are tiny, incredibly hard metallic "flecks," which give the completed piece a much more organic feel. Evergreen Jade™ is harvested from Bull Trout Jade's claims in Western Washington.
